IonQ is looking for a quantum applications scientist to develop novel ways to use our state-of-the-art trapped-ion quantum computers to efficiently solve the world’s most difficult problems. You will work closely with quantum circuit compilation experts, quantum system experts and external partners of IonQ to identify pathfinder quantum algorithms and implement them on our digital, fully programmable quantum computers. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, self-directed, and innovative, with a great attitude and work ethic.

As an Applications Scientist, you’ll help enable customers to leverage the power of our quantum computers, with opportunities to switch projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our researchers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across application areas as we continue to push quantum technology forward.

LOCATION:

Our headquarters are in College Park, MD with future plans to start a Seattle office. Due to the pandemic, for the foreseeable future, you may work from anywhere. 

 

THE ROLE:

You will be part of an R&D team that will drive the adoption of our quantum computers to solve the world’s most computationally challenging problems.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identifying and developing quantum algorithms that promise quantum advantages in practice and at scale
  • Developing quantum circuits that implement quantum algorithms in close collaboration with quantum compiler experts and quantum system experts
  • Communicating and collaborating with external partners of IonQ to help determine and solve problems of interest that leverage IonQ’s quantum computers
  • Contributing to software toolchains that help widen IonQ’s quantum computer user base

                    

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate degree in Physics, Computer Science or relevant field, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience in quantum information science
  • Proven communication skills and quick learning capability
  • Success working collaboratively in a team environment

                    

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of Python or C++
  • Working knowledge of Linux
